Short Story Sunday!! Episode 1...

Forever Friend:

As I was looking around the playground a little girl caught my attention. She was sitting by the merry-go-round with her head hung low. She looked sad and scared to be here. I was a little hesitant to walk up to her, but I felt drawn to her.

“Would you like to play with me?” I asked.

“Yes. Do you like the monkey bars?” She asked shyly.

“They are my favorite!”

“Mine too!” She said with a big smile.

“What’s your name?”

“Marlowe. What is yours?”

"I’m Molly." I took her hand and we skipped to the monkey bars.

It was our first day at Kindergarten and I was thrilled that we became friends so quickly.

During circle time our teacher, Mrs. Rory, asked everyone their names. I couldn’t believe she had skipped over me and went straight to Marlowe. I was sitting a little out of her sight, but she should have leaned forward so she could see me.

“You skipped Molly, Mrs. Rory," Marlowe said.

Mrs. Rory looked stunned and looked by Marlow, “Okay, I am sorry Molly.”

I noticed that the kids were all staring at us now, but I was going to be brave. "It's okay. I am Molly."

“And my name is Marlowe,” she said with so much confidence. I could tell she was nervous because she was holding my hand now; she was trembling.

As Mrs. Rory continued around the circle, Marlowe squeezed my hand. “You make me feel brave.”

“You make me feel brave too,” I smiled.

After school, Marlowe’s mom approached us. Marlowe burst out, “can Molly play at our house today?”

“Sure! I am so glad you made a friend on your first day. I told you there was nothing to worry about,” her mom replied.

“She is my best friend and we played with each other all day.” Marlowe was all smiles.

S he lived close to the school, so we walked together, hand in hand.

“Tell me about your friend, Molly,” Marlowe’s mom said.

“She is funny, and she is my best friend,"

"That's nice,” her mom replied. Does she live nearby and did her parents say it was okay for her to come play?"

Marlowe turned to me and asked, “Where do you live?”

"I live down this street in a pink house," I replied.

“I wish we lived in a pink house, that is my favorite color.”

Her mother was looking at us kind of funny. I wasn’t sure if she liked me, but I didn’t care. Marlowe was my best friend.

“Did her parents say it was okay for her to come over?”

“Did you ask your parents? I didn’t see them at the school.” Marlowe looked at me again, her eyes were almost sad.

“My house is close to yours so I will ask them when I get home, but I know they will say yes," I replied.

“Yay! We get to play at my house! I have lots of dolls and toys we can play with.” Marlowe sang happily.

Her mother kept looking at us. She was making me feel really nervous, but Marlowe made me feel safe.

I showed up to Marlowe’s house not long after they got home. Her mom gave us chocolate chip cookies for a snack. They were the best cookies I ever had.

We played lots of different games in Marlowe’s room. She had a ton of dolls and Legos that were pink and purple. We even danced around in Marlowe's dress-up clothes. Soon her mom said it was time for dinner.

Marlowe’s parents were a little strange, but they didn’t mind that they had to set an extra seat for me. Her mother was the best cook, it was probably because she worked at the school as a cook.

Her dad was a teacher at one of the high schools and I wondered if he would be our teacher one day.

“So, Marlowe, how was your first day of kindergarten?” Mr. Greenfield asked as he was spooning some peas in his mouth. “It was fun. Me and Molly are best friends,” Marlowe said with a mouthful of chicken.

“That's nice sweetie,” he replied. Her parents looked at each other.

“Did you and Molly make other friends?” Her dad asked.

“I don’t need to. I have Molly,” she said as she danced a little in her chair. “You are my best friend forever.”

“You are mine too, Forever friends.” We both laughed.
